Oskar Barnack's prototype Ur-Leica of 1914 pioneered 35mm photography. Commercial production began in 1925, evolving through the screw-mount era with models from the original Leica I through the IIIg of 1957. These cameras use the 39mm thread mount (LTM/M39), separate viewfinder and rangefinder windows, and bottom-loading film. Fully mechanical construction means many remain operational a century later. Pre-war black paint and chrome models command particular collector interest.
