Leica entered medium format in 2008 with the S2, featuring a 30×45mm CCD sensor—larger than 645 format—in a body sized closer to a 35mm SLR. The proprietary S-mount lens system delivers edge-to-edge sharpness matched to the sensor's resolution. The S (Typ 007) moved to CMOS with live view and 4K video. The current S3 houses a 64MP sensor. Weather sealing, integrated GPS, and robust construction make the S system practical for location work alongside studio use.
