This Nokton captures the classic look of the Summicron 40mm with modern optics.
This Voigtländer Nokton 40mm f/1.4 draws directly from Leica's discontinued Summicron 40mm f/2, a compact lens originally designed for the Leica CL in the 1970s. Voigtländer acquired the optical design and improved it with a faster f/1.4 maximum aperture while maintaining the same compact dimensions.
The 40mm focal length splits the difference between 35mm and 50mm standards, offering a natural perspective that many shooters find more versatile than either. At f/1.4, the Nokton provides two stops more speed than the original Summicron while weighing roughly the same. The lens mounts to any M-mount body and couples with rangefinder focusing mechanisms.
Voigtländer's modern manufacturing brings consistent quality control and multi-coating technology to the classic optical formula. The all-metal construction and brass helicoid match traditional Leica build standards. Despite the fast aperture, the lens remains small enough for everyday carry—one of the most compact f/1.4 options available for the M mount.
This example includes its original box and shows minimal wear consistent with light use. The glass remains clear with no fungus, haze, or separation. Focus helicoid turns smoothly throughout its range, and aperture blades operate cleanly.
