Made of brass and built to last for generations - this classic 50mm lens is a joy to use on any Leica M.
This Leica Summicron 5cm f/2 collapsible represents one of Leica's classic screw-mount lenses, produced from 1953 to 1968. The collapsible design reduces the lens to roughly half its extended length, making it ideal for compact carrying with M3, M2, and other screw-mount bodies.
The 5cm focal length (effectively 50mm) served as Leica's standard lens throughout the 1950s and 1960s. This Summicron design delivered sharper performance than earlier collapsible lenses while maintaining the compact form factor that defined the Leica system. The f/2 maximum aperture provides adequate speed for available light work without the bulk of faster alternatives.
Brass construction and all-metal focusing helicoid characterize this era of Leica manufacturing. The collapsible mechanism locks securely in both extended and retracted positions. When collapsed, the lens sits nearly flush with the camera body, protecting the front element during transport.
This example shows wear consistent with its age, approximately 60-70 years of use. Some coating separation is visible on internal elements—common for lenses of this vintage and typically having minimal impact on image quality. Front and rear elements remain clean with no fungus present. Aperture blades show no oil contamination and operate smoothly.
No modifications have been made to this lens. All components remain in original factory specification.
Coating separation is present on internal elements, typical for a lens of this age. The lens shows cosmetic wear consistent with decades of use. All mechanical functions operate correctly.
